Moving past the Moon of Falling Leaves (read here), this Heading Toward Winter New Moon focuses on the heart of the molecular matrix and marrow of what is possible and needed in our lives. Traditionally this is the time of year where ideas, thoughts, and manifestations are created as the energetic seeds to be planted during the dark of Winter Solstice (Dec 21) towards a Spring Equinox (March 20) sprouting soon in the next twirl of time. August's Solar Eclipse continues to ripple with wonderful waves of deep and potent transformations and Jupiter's new nest in Scorpio has emotional waves navigating our ships through the seas ahead for the next 13 moons. Trust emotions, trust life, build your backbone of knowing you can and need to manifest a life that expresses your nature, talent & skills well as supports what is yours to support in this exchange of breath. Remember that the longest and strongest medicine has always been the good company of those you trust and love. This moon is a dream time: Nourish yourself well with love, dream deep and breathe big in this November Heading Towards Winter New Moon.

Time Swirls says She who spins along with the Galaxy.
pigments pave the way
drawings made from clay
stories shape each day
deep in our bones they lay.
swirl back a spin or three
who do you see
smiles from the old midnight suns
a caressing song from your greater than greatest grandmother’s hands
bellowing clouds from that only stew pot
a journey days long towards the winter lands
trees miles wide as far as can be
little ones carried on backs
the big fish of prehistoric seas
simple love as the first and longest story
remember there is no line between then and now
here is there in the cosmic corral
Time is but a Swirl from the long spindle whorl
singing a song symphonies long
Thank you Miss She Who Gifts Us Everything

Tea: Elderberry, American Skullcap, Mullien, Holy Basil
I am reminded that in Chinese Traditional Medicine, we are currently moving through the Season of Metal in which the energetics of the Lungs (grief) and Colon (waste/detoxification) predominate. A natural time to turn inward, process and move through the grief and other energies of the year that served us well but are no longer needed for the time of transformation ahead. Just as the garden soil requires the compost to be turned or tilled in preparation towards replanted, so it is as well with our energetic and physical bodies. As we release, much space is created and needed as this is a great time of manifesting the next planting of experience as we continually shift towards a more authentic expression of our natural and beautiful selves.
Dogbane: Dogbane helps us access the courage to follow our instincts, which is vital to growth and change. This is the essence to support self-confidence. The Practitioner's Encyclopedia of Flower Remedies by Clare G. Harvey "For the deep release of trapped traumatic energy from recesses of the unconscious. This essences get to those ‘hard to reach’ places to clear remnants of trauma. "
Nicker Nut:" Discernment about, protection of and support for our new creations. 'When something is being born, be it a project, a new idea, a new way to live or a new understanding of your life purpose, I AM adept at supporting you to know if it is something you want to continue on with. I illuminate the change process so that you can move forward or let go with much greater confidence. I demonstrate how to protect and manifest your endeavor if it is in alignment with your purpose.'"
Adventurine: "Strengthens the central vertical axis which stabilizes us during expansion experiences; helps us move into and through new experiences with grace, stamina and perseverance; good for spiritual trailblazers and pioneers."*
Carnelian: "Increases the etheric body's ability to access pranic energy; energizes and clears the nadirs (the energetic interface between the etheric body and the meridians), allowing a greater flow of energy to the meridians."* https://alaskanessences.com/collections/gem-elixirs/products/carnelian
Elderberry: A powerful & very tasty antiviral immune tonic, Elderberries are high in antioxidants and vitamin rich. Wonderful throughout the winter moons, but especially so during the extreme temperature fluctuations that accompany us and bring about the flu season during this moon.
American Skullcap: A nervine, relaxant, and constitutional tonic, Skullcap nourishes both mind and body. Relaxation is key to the release, recuperation, and revitalization called for during this moon.
Mullein: An anti-inflammatory & demulcent respiratory herb, Mullein gently tones and nourishes the mucous membranes of the entire respiratory tract.
Holy Basil: Also known as Tulsi, Holy Basil helps the body adapt and reduces stress response (physical & emotional), providing balance and allowing us to remain attuned to the healing energies around us.
*(The intelligence and harmonizing qualities of gemstones need not be ingested through essences if already in your field, so please do hold, wear, or have gemstones near you. )
New Moon Medicine will be available moonthly at the start of the New Christian Year.

Moments before what is sure to be known as the Great Santa Rosa Fire darkened the day in a frozen red ember sun and changed the sound/sight/city/soulscape of thousands of lives, I thought about machinery and man-made plumes garbed in grey. Between then and now burnt half pages of books land on my porch, masks masks and more masks made appearances, dogs were walked, people perched like lollipop licks around the gooy tootsie roll center of petrol pumps, cars crammed children and pets and papers out of town, facebook became real important, and those of us who stayed in town watched and waited, looked and leaned to the fate of the gods, prepared and helped as best as we could, sweated, breathed (badly), relaxed, then sweated, and continue to carry both in the boil of our blood as the fire-breathing dragon still scours the land.
I thought of and did draw a dragon on this I-think-it’s-all-clear-but-never-know-we’ll-see-as-the-wind-gods-might-decide-to-change-their-tune-and-the-dragon-his-dance morning, but he’s not what I feel. I feel a mighty strong beautiful flower… the seeds of a Fire Flower to be more accurate as I witness and feel and see the seeds of a community in kindness and camaraderie much more powerfully than the quick karate-chop changes that came upon us overnight. And so the Fire Flower sprouts seeds of humanity and beauty and compassion, and may we continue to do so in the renewing of life on these once Pomo lands that we call home.
A thousand and one blessings to all affected by the fire’s scorched breath, especially those with lost loves.
I only knew a handful of things about my whiskered grandfather who lived across the salted seas: he was respected & wise, he loved the natural world and adventured all over Iran in his beloved Chevy Blazer, and he owned a “factory.” Raised here in the States, all I could imagine was the perpetual billowing of fluffy white or dirty dark grey, slabs of concrete and click clack machinery, whistles and punchcards and lines of men with Iranian lunchpails filled with saffron rice and onion chicken, lots o’ fruit, and of course the break room with a giant Giant-sized samovar ornate and intricate as the liquid heart of the factory and it’s men. I had seen pictures of the tenement garment factories of New York, formerly New Amsterdam, formerly Manna-hata (the "land of many hills”), formerly no name but part of the fabric of life filled with gods and goddesses and great beings of all densities singing and swaying and sleeping under the same sun-lit sky and living uninterrupted according to their natures. Clear as today I still remember footage of the great Detroit assembly lines where mustached men ( I ❤️ the 70’s!) gave their hands to the giant claw that lifted and pushed and pulled and put into place the thousand and one parts needed to marry into the medley of motorization known as the wondrous automobile.
When first re-visiting my birthland, I was so excited to visit “the factory“ and meet this great chimney stack that I had heard about for 25 years. Lo and behold - it was a shop with four hands greased! At first I thought I had been duped… “Why do all Persians make a mountain out of a molehill?… This is not a factory… ” and so on and more. In Farsi, the word for factory is “work-house.” Yes, actually it was a work house where lovely greazy hairy dark skinned short strong men who politely gazed indirectly towards a visiting woman gave their hands and backs to assemble industrial ranges for dignitaries and embassies and hotels and mostly European & North American expansion as most Iranians can easily (and always have) feast a wedding weekend, a holy day, a clan day (around 40-100 I’d say), a guests night, or any night deliciously without breaking a sweat, especially on the saddle of a Clydesdale range. Their home fires held the powerful embers found in the lineage of rings, the pressurized plant remains called coal, and even the desiccated forage frayed into feces that litters, actually loves arid mountain rock and sands. Those native fire-breathing dragons were known as well as the back of any hand by people who know hands! And so I learn “factory” … U.S. of A. 80’s style, then 1990's style while working in a fishery in Kodiak, Alaska, post revolutionary Iran style (2000), and now-not-now style in looking at the root of the word from Latin meaning “to do.” A place where things get done, and did, and made, and most often for trade. But always in my mind I see what you may see… the fluffy cloud atop a cylindrical steed, a workhouse for the workforce - all without prayer beads.
After creating this collage I took ten or so pictures throughout the day capturing the variance in light from the natural movements of the sun through the glass, as well as several electrically lit frames. To my amazement, every single picture showed different colors and textures and shapes and feel and image. So many faces to this one creature. Yes the perspective of life is always 360 degrees on one plane multiplied by by another 360 on a second plane, and so on and so on which makes me wonder how in the heck is any perspective retained for longer than a nanosecond? What is the imprint, who does the embossing? What kind of glue sticks so good and leaves a mean tear mark that needs a huff and puff buff and polish in it’s aftermath? How did perspective get to be static and non-imaginary in the predominating accepted reality? Wait… I choose the print? Which image captured do I want to reign supreme and send forth as my creation… purple hue, polka dotty, pretty, primitive? Which is to be presented as permanent publicly? Which one do I make more real?
… a strange new power discovered and dictated by “the factory.”
Crater Lake. puttering up the windy lane of drab ashy asphalt surrounded by deep dark chocolate stones pointy and pocked. Was a wonder to experience earth anew… surrounded only by pumice stone. They tell you only on Mars way out there but it’s here - the craters, the stone, the stark simple deep rich decadence of blue and brown. I had no idea the blue was coming. Yes above the sky high blue was a sight. reaching the summit the exhale preceded the inhale of a thousand wonders never thought or seen or felt yet so familiar as if returning to ancestral lands. The Caldera at Jemez whispered the same tune fifteen years later while tickling rust off the forgettfulness… they tell of time stark and still and fixed in unhidden absolute. And so this was the first big blue that bit my tongue and twirled time beyond the seven seas of possibility towards the illusion of yesterday-today- tomorrow-not yet-coming-gone-we’ll see. The beginning Big Blue that pushed further towards greeting they say Kodiak bear paw and single engine planes, 200 pounds of silver skinned flesh soon to be slivered no longer seen first time seen. sitting on the back of a turtle mound on her belly, gazing out and up and beyond only to SEA when scraggly beards slumbered and smeared boards were wiped clean and infinity found in perpetual summer sea blue never dream eyes open always dream interrupted by fox yelps and bear yawns when the huff and puff of factory life exhaled for four orbits around that time-teller.
Time-teller…. that 200 lb silver god or goddess carried in by 8 hands was as majestic and wise and deep and dark and knowing as the exfoliating face of holy volcanic lands. With a laughing smile that beauty said see me remember me i am still here and forever will be, don't ever forget cuz theres no death on these scales. only this gift of sight.
One little hint of a whiff of a molecule caught in the olfactory nerves triggers a cascading waterfall of life into remembrance…. one bar of a tune can bring back the choreography of decades of life. The sight of the magnificence of life bolts out of the mundane and plain grayscale of society …. bold beauty deep pores crackling mouth lines and whips while hooting and hollering with all their might. and of course audrey hepburn’s voice screams out in memory - move your blooming arse. then the wudang master enters without sound in complete harmony with every fractal that forms and speaks in silent tongue - stillness is what is needed. And the frog on the lotus flower sings out to the moonlight above along with cricket bowstrings and firefly conductors…. they know… the balancing act… the fine line of tension held on the dynamic motion of water molecules filled with life… breathing life… using all senses at all times… the grand pappies and grand nannies of lightning bolt legs and super sensory skin in a very patient and still and solid soft form. Exhalting their virtues... of course I am... and may it always be so.

Experimenting with black paper and bright neon acrylic paints, I attempted a portrait that morphed into a Betsy Johnson meets Courtney Love gone bad - kindergarten style composition. She sat in the stacks for many months as I am never one to waste paper or pigment and always try to find the beauty in Life no matter what form she may hold. One - yay I can cut with scissors day - I took to this piece, transformed her into a mish-mash non-patterned collage, and over and over again my mind kept saying - goldilocks. Not one to have been read to as a child (you know how it goes as an immigrant first to speak English in your household), I added a heart onto the goldilocks creation…. and then needed to find out who she was and where the heart came in as I'm one whose never been to keen on heart shapes.
Interestingly enough, goldilocks was originally a fox! Before this ancient fairy-tale transformed into her modern published version with mama, papa, and baby bear, the intruder (who might have been a guest!) into the den of three male bears was a female fox, from which the etymology of vixen originates. The fox appears in the folklore of many cultures as a figure of cunning or trickery, which in actually is wisdom, or as an animal possessed with magic powers, especially associated with transformation. A wise old lady fox who in other versions of this tale is a silver-haired elder entered the cave - the old sacred places of trance, transformation, healing, and ritual if not shelter - and left with the gift of Bear medicine. There’s much more to say here, but I will leave it be and let you meet the layers of fox & bear medicine in the living of your own magical story.

I first learned of and began making Fire Cider a decade ago while attending the California School of Herbal Studies, founded by the well-known herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. Let's just say that was the beginning of a grand love affair - I make and drink anywhere from 2-4 gallons throughout the sniffly season and beyond! Throughout the years I have added different herbs, gifted widely to friends and loved ones, and now share a bit with you all as a means of keeping Fire Cider and all traditional herbal recipes from being trademarked and owned... which means lawsuits, legality, and taking away the basic rights of herbalists and medicine makers from selling medicine in their local communities.
Yes friends, February 2nd is now World Fire Cider Day, although most days from September into Spring tend to be Fire Cider Day for those of us who sip on this wonderful immune boosting, antiviral & microbial tonic. If you are already a lover, then please support this day dedicated towards keeping this traditional medicine from being trademarked. If not, then welcome to what is sure to become a staple of your diet and health... named Fire Cider!
